November 2008 - Highlight on Health: Uncovering Matters of the Mind and Heart - Conflicts within the Asian Woman

Asian women struggle with issues of anxiety, perfectionism, and low self-esteem, often internalizing stress, saving face, and shaming themselves with guilt, while recognizing their adverse effects.  Dr. Josephine Kim and AWC members participated in a thought-provoking and engaging discussion about the challenges shared by many Asian women. Experts report that:
- Asian American women between the ages of 15-24 have the highest rates of suicide of women in the U.S., and those over 65 years old are ten times more likely to commit suicide than their Caucasian counterparts
- Asian American women have the lowest of both core and public self-esteem
- Asian Americans report extreme worry over parental criticism, expectations, and self

Dr. Kim is a Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is the Executive Director of Mustard Seed Generation, Inc., a non-profit organization she founded with the aim of educating Asian Americans on the salience of mental health issues and the importance of utilizing professional services.

November 2006 – Inaugural Event

The inaugural event for Asian Women’s Connection (AWC) was held on November 30 at the Finale Restaurant in Harvard Square. It was an exciting launch to a dynamic organization that is dedicated to “empowering and inspiring Asian professional women.” More than 40 women from various backgrounds and industries made new connections amidst tables of decadent chocolate desserts, cakes, and pastries. Not only did the sugar levels give a boost of energy to women who are typically on the run, a dynamic performance by actresses Christina Chan and Judy Tso from Bobby Pins Up Your Nose brought a touch of humor and sensitivity to real-life stories of Asian women who struggle with their body image. Jean Russell, AWC’s co-founder and President, introduced the board and encouraged guests to sign up for membership. The evening concluded with a facilitated networking exercise that benefited even the savviest of relationship builders.
